RAB NE BANA DI JODI Review

One often cribs about Yash Raj repeatedly casting SRK in similar roles, in film after film. However, this allegation is far from true. Right from DARR to CHAK DE INDIA, the combination has collaborated on varied subjects. With RAB NE BANA DI JODI, they take this association to another level altogether.

To start with, RAB NE BANA DI JODI brings back the golden team of DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE and MOHABBATEIN after a hiatus and the only parallel you can draw with the earlier achievements is the fact that each of them is a love story. Otherwise, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is truly different. It's not set in London or Switzerland, there's no sarso ke khet, it's not about a good looking couple sporting designer outfits and accessories, there's no parental opposition either.

Write your own movie review of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Set your eyes anywhere and you see countless unknown faces. In markets, malls, streets, airports, stations, just about everywhere. And everyone who walks this planet has a story to tell. With RAB NE BANA DI JODI, Aditya Chopra talks of one such ordinary person. Living in one of those crowded bylanes of Amritsar, his life undergoes a 360 degree change the moment he sets his eyes on a beautiful girl.

Like SRK does a 360 degree turn in the movie, Aditya Chopra too does a complete turn as far as the story is concerned. Seeped in Indian emotions and traditional values and very desi at heart, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is a complete departure from the good-looking, picture perfect YRF movies that sport glam bodies parading designer outfits.

For the present-day generation, a story like RAB NE BANA DI JODI may come across as an original piece of work, but if you've been a keen observer of films of yore, you can't help overlook the similarities with Dr. V. Shantaram's NAVRANG and more precisely, Raj Kapoor's SATYAM SHIVAM SUNDARAM. In fact, RAB NE BANA DI JODI also brings back memories of the low-cost MAIN MERI PATNI AUR WOH [Rajpal Yadav, Rituparna Sengupta], not in terms of story, but in terms of characters.

The problem is, RAB NE BANA DI JODI works in patches. The first 30 minutes and the penultimate 30 minutes are the highpoint of the enterprise, but the screenplay in between doesn't hold your attention. That's the truth!

In a nutshell, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE. It's not MOHABBATEIN either. At best, it's an average fare that may generate some curiosity initially, that's it. You expect much, much more, but… alas!

Surinder [Shah Rukh Khan], a simple, clean hearted, honest man working for Punjab Power, leads a humdrum life, but the moment he sets his eyes on Taani [Anushka Sharma], his life undergoes a change. She's flamboyant, fun-loving, vivacious, unlike Surinder. But unforeseen circumstances bring them together.

Director Aditya Chopra chooses a desi plot and weaves a story around an ordinary, middle class couple. The story begins with gusto and the initial scenes between Shah Rukh and Anushka are thoroughly interesting. But the screenplay falters the moment Shah Rukh's character Surinder transforms into Raj and his personality undergoes a sea-change. The first question that strikes you is, why didn't Anushka realize it's him, her husband, not someone else? Sure, he has undergone a complete makeover, but how can you not recognise your husband's voice or appearance? That's a glaring flaw, it's like taking the viewer for granted!

The sequences thereafter are equally uneven. A few sequences are well executed, but the problem is that Shah Rukh keeps playing the game till the very end. If he had to win her heart, he could've done so by making her realize that it's a mirage, making her realize that the person she loves and the person she's married are the same.

There's a twist in the tale only towards the pre-climax, when Anushka is ready to elope with Raj, her dance partner. The climax, the drama that ensues during the finale of the dance competition, is excellent. Even the end [the honeymoon in Japan] brings a smile on your face.

Director Aditya Chopra is letdown by his own writing. The story is not convincing, the screenplay is not water-tight and therefore, RAB NE BANA DI JODI does not create the impact it ought to make. Also, the film is quite lengthy. With a running time of approx. 2.45 hours, RAB NE BANA DI JODI could've easily done with some trimming. The unwanted flab could've been trimmed for a better impact.

Salim-Sulaiman's music is of a mixed variety. 'Haule Haule' is a superb composition and 'Dance Pe Chance' is foot-tapping, but the remaining tracks, though well shot, are plain average. Ravi Chandran's cinematography is top notch.

Shah Rukh is superb as the simpleton and your heart goes out to him every time he appears on screen. You want the underdog to win and here too, the way SRK tackles this part, you're all the more convinced. As Raj, SRK goes overboard at times. Anushka looks the character and surprises you with a confident performance. It's no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the calibre of SRK and Anushka manages it very well from start to end. Vinay Pathak is incredible. He contributes enormously in making the proceedings lively.

On the whole, RAB NE BANA DI JODI is vey desi at heart with a strong start and an equally strong emotional end. Having said that, you cannot deny the fact that you expect much, much more from Aditya Chopra. RAB NE BANA DI JODI is no DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, it's not MOHABBATEIN either. It's lower than that! At the box-office, the business will be better at some multiplexes, while the single screens will be below average. The business in Overseas, however, should be better, but the business in India will totter, tremble and fumble after the initial weekend.

WE CAN'T AFFORD Rab Ne Bana De Jodi to FLOP

WE CAN'T AFFORD Rab Ne Bana De Jodi to FLOP

After a series of flops from Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra is making sure nothing goes wrong with his directorial venture "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" releasing on December 12, 2008.

Although the promotional activities of the film have been affected by the current situation in Mumbai, there is a drastic change in the attitude of the introvert filmmaker.

Adi is known to be secretive about his films. Normally, no one, not even the actors, get too see their film much before its release.

But this time, to get the right feedback before the release of "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi", Adi held a special screening for Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Gauri Khan and her kids and the film's debutant actress Anushka Sharma.

Shahrukh GLORIFIES the COMMON MAN

Shahrukh Khan has been terribly missed since the actor has been missing on the social circuit as well as on the filmy front. Post OSO, the dimpled heartthrob has had no release (he just did a cameo in Bhoot Nath). What is surprising is the fact that The King Khan has been keeping a low profile, inspite of his highly awaited film ?Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?, slated to release in a few days time.

SRK has apparently refrained from making any sort of promotion keeping the current atmosphere of grief that has engulfed Mumbai owing to the terror attacks in mind. However when there is a combination of SRK and Yash Raj put together where is the need of promotion? Chak De India too was not promoted before its release and the film went on to become the biggest success of 2007. So is Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi following suit?

The expectations from the film are sky high and so are the stories surrounding the film. Talks of Rab Ne being inspired by Amol Palekar?s Golmaal have also been ample. So will SRK revive Amol Palekar?s famous ?common man? character from Rajnigandha, Golmaal, Choti Si Baat with Rab Ne?

?The film is not based on Golmaal. It is true that Amol Palekar glorified the image of a common man through his many films and SRK too will play one in Rab Ne but that doesn?t mean his character or acting will be based on Palekar?s. Common man role can be executed differently by two actors. Also its better for people to see for themselves what the film is all about instead of assuming something. A lot of people think they know the story of Rab Ne?, said an industry insider.

We too agree that is too early to say if the film and SRK?s character are inspired by Palekar but for one thing we are extremely happy. After years of seeing A grade actors sporting designer outfits and looking perfectly boring there is one actor who chose to risk his star status by going de-glam and that?s SRK.

After witnessing SRK and his six pack in OSO, it is taking us time to acknowledge the same hottie wearing an extra lose formal shirt and a pair of magnifying glasses but you know what ? Haule Haule we have actually started liking this simpleton SRK too!

::::: Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi witnesses phenomenal advance bookings!

The film industry and movie buffs are pinning their hopes on Shah Rukh Khan to deliver the next big hit of the year with the upcoming Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, the advance bookings of which have been "terrific".

"The response for bookings is terrific," said Sanjeev Kohli, director and CEO of Yash Raj Films, the production company behind the film. According to a source from multiplex chain PVR, the bookings for "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, which has a running time of 2 hours and 46 minutes , are much better than the past few releases." The situation has been quite gloomy in the past weeks except for bookings for Dil Kabaddi'. So, we are looking forward to this film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. It might be a saviour in these times and be the next hit of this year," the source said.

Most multiplexes like PVR and Satyam have reserved multiple auditoriums and time slots for the screening of the film and are receiving a positive response for advance bookings. This, despite the fact that advance bookings opened for all theatres just Wednesday.

" We delayed the advance booking date to synchronize with the multiplex advance booking day, which is Wednesday," Kohli explained. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a story of a mismatched couple played by Shah Rukh Khan and newcomer Anushka Sharma who find true love in the backdrop of a dance competition. It is being released worldwide at over 1,200 screens, including approximately 300 prints for the overseas market.

Apart from being Shah Rukh Khan's first release this year, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is the first Shah Rukh Khan-Aditya Chopra combination film in over eight years. They had last collaborated for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1994 and for Mohabbatein in 2000.

Film critic Anupama Chopra says everyone has '' great expectations '' from this film. " I am a fan of Aditya Chopra's style of candy floss and romantic movies. I hope Aditya and Shah Rukh Khan create the same magic that they did with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. It will be interesting to see them create another iconic figure with this film after they popularised Raj (Shah Rukh's character in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge)," Anupama Chopra said over phone from Mumbai.

Though the production house has tried to keep the storyline of the film under wraps, it has constantly emphasised that the film is about an ordinary man. Anupama Chopra says she is curious to see how Shah Rukh Khan, who has mostly essayed larger-than-life roles with a stylised persona, would be able to carry off the image of an everyday man.

" He has played that look in Chak De! India and Swades but Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a romantic film. I am very curious to know how he does in the film," she said. Two of the film's songs " Haule haule " and " dance pe chance " are already ruling the charts...!
